What attracted you to Salt Communications?
The strong focus on security and sharp focus on their core product, and the personalities behind the company drew my interest. I was very excited to work with some very talented and intelligent people solving some complicated problems.
When does your current role entail at Salt Communications?
So far I’ve worked mainly on the desktop application. We tend to not stick just to one area or discipline though, so I’m looking forward to working on some of the other aspects of our tech stack.
What has challenged you within the industry?
Aligning a product with customer expectations and the business’ future objectives has always been tricky to get right. As developers, we tend to focus on the technical aspects of a product and it’s quite easy to lose sight of what our customers value. Other than that, nearly every day tends to bring new technical challenges – it’s all very exciting, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
What is the best part of your job at Salt Communications?
The personal responsibility and ownership. We’re a smaller development team, and every single developer has a large impact on the product.
What advice would you give to others starting out in their career in the cybersecurity industry?
Understand the tools you’re using. Delve into development tools, libraries and frameworks and figure out how they work – it’ll save you a lot of time in the future. Also, don’t be afraid to learn from people with more experience – understand a problem well enough to know what sort of questions to ask, then ask them. Finally, just enjoy it! It’s a fascinating field, with a constantly evolving landscape.
