Time with the company: 6 months
What attracted you to Salt Communications?
The kind of work that Salt Communications has been doing really interested me and being able to learn about mobile development specifically in the cyber security industry also peaked my interest in the company.
The team at Salt Communications was a key driver for me to apply for my role. I had previously attended talks that Salt Communications had spoken at which motivated me to do my further research. Salt Communications have a really nice balance of senior experienced staff and young highly talented graduates who I believed I would learn a lot from. I believed that working with a team of this nature would allow me to put the skills I’ve learnt in university to practice and also to improve these skills throughout my time here.
How have you found the experience?
It has been a great experience as I’ve learnt so much in the 6 months that I’ve been here and I’m looking forward to learning even more going forward. Everyone has been really helpful with answering any of the questions that I have and it’s been really valuable being able to see how the whole team works so well together. It’s been really interesting gaining a lot of insight into how the product is built and all the different aspects that come together to make Salt Communications what it is.
I’ve been lucky enough to work closely with by the Android and iOS teams which has been hugely beneficial for my development. This experience has given me an invaluable insight into the similarities and differences between development on each of the platforms.
What’s the best part of your job at Salt Communications?
Everyone’s willingness to help you improve and to answer questions that I have had has been really good. When I have questions relating to things that I’m unsure about I’m always able to get a detailed answer from someone who’s willing to help, this is very useful as if I have a problem for a while, I don’t have to sit about and waste too much time looking for an answer when someone nearby is very likely to have the answer to the question I’m asking.
Working at Salt is really enjoyable as well as challenging. Even though we are constantly working to tight deadlines, and sometimes late nights, there’s always a great atmosphere in the office with a lot of fun and laughs. It makes it incredibly easy to motivate yourself for work when you enjoy it.
Would you recommend Salt Communications to other interested Students?
I would absolutely recommend Salt Communications as it provides an incredible platform to gain a greater insight into the cybersecurity industry. My experience at Salt Communications has helped me in my own personal development, as I’ve gained so much knowledge that I’ll also be able to transfer into my last few years at university.
I continue to learn everyday at Salt Communications and the team here have been so influential in that learning process. I have been constantly learning new skills and am given as much responsibility as I want, which is unheard of for placement years (internships). The management team at Salt Communications are continually pushing you harder to develop your skills, whether that’s for development, or even presenting to clients. This experience will be extremely important for me going back to university, but also for the rest of my career.
What Advice would you give to others starting their career in the Cybersecurity Industry?
I would definitely advise people wanting to move into the cybersecurity industry to ask as many questions as you need to to wrap your head around a problem. In my experience if there’s anything you’re unsure about there’s always someone willing to give you a very good answer which really helps you progress in your learning.
The cybersecurity industry is constantly developing and asking for advice from experts will help you take advantage of the time you have when starting a career. Building your knowledge quickly will help you to get the best start possible in this industry. As well as that, getting involved in as much work as possible at a young age is incredibly beneficial, whilst it is difficult, it really helps to develop invaluable skills for development.
I would also suggest to keep up with Cybersecurity news as there’s always something exciting to read about within the industry that is happening every day.
