Celebrating 9 Years of Securing Business Communications

Salt Communications have been trading for 9 years this month.

How has the world changed for us as a company and for everyone else in the world of mobile communications in those 9 years?

Let’s look at some headlines from 2013

In the USA Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind the NSA surveillance revelations

In the UK‘The year we all went mobile’

What was happening in the mobile space?

After Blackberry’s years of dominance in the enterprise space it was very obvious around 2012 that Blackberry was losing its position as the leader enterprise mobility space.  It simply did not move fast enough after the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 and then Android in 2009. The new ecosystem being offered by iOS and Android meant that the Blackberry offering suddenly seemed very limited.  These new mobile ecosystems resulted in global communications quickly switching from through-the-telecoms-network to over-the-top (OTT) of the network.  The vast majority of these new “apps” were consumer based and offered very little assurances from a privacy perspective.

These same consumer apps began to brand themselves as “secure” because they started offering some form of encryption within their technology. In Salt, we understood that encryption alone will not suffice to make a communication app secure, and we saw the opportunity to build a system which offered all of the engaging elements of the consumer apps, while focusing on an organisations’ security, allowed them to have full control of the system, remain compliant and, of course, keep their private communications secure.

And Salt was born!

Salt Communications was then formed in 2013 by a group of tech professionals with a shared history in enterprise security, telecoms, network optimisation and app development. The crucial decision made in 2013 was for the founders of Salt to focus on building an enterprise only solution (with no consumer equivalent) and move back from California to Belfast to found the company from Northern Ireland. From Belfast the company would be able to be close to the initial market and grow with the assistance of high quality, youthful talent coming out of the local universities in Belfast.

When developing the MVP the Salt executive team sourced some high profile design customers who would help to develop the product roadmap for the product. SaltDNA (now rebranded Salt Communications) began as a born global company as they believed that their key customer base was situated outside of the United Kingdom. All these decisions eventually helped the organisation to expand globally, build relationships with customers across multiple sectors and increase the company’s global footprint.

Salts Journey through the years..

Over the past nine years Salt has grown on many levels. From developing an array of key features that are utilised by some of the largest organisations within industries such as enterprise, Legal, Finance and Media. Salt has been deployed by Government, Policing and Military clients who rely on our technology to operate securely. From a concept to a globally deployed secure communications system, Salt’s expanding user base have all come from operations in Belfast.  In 2013 Salt started building the team from the ground up with both experienced mentors and fresh talent from local universities, graduating from accelerator programmes such as Tech Nation, LORCA Ignite and many award wins.

So what does the future hold for Salt?

Salt Communications have been deployed globally by some of the world’s largest organisations to keep their most sensitive real-time communications secure. We have regularly been recognised for the quality of our team and product and have been independently verified by some of the world’s leading security validation companies.
